The Money Tree

A Money Tree further down the driveway

Hello and welcome,

As my hubby and I prepare to leave Melbourne for London in just over a week, we are making good progress with our ‘to-do’ list…
until a small bush between our driveway and the next door neighbour’s fell onto our side. It wasn’t a high priority to tend to it immediately, and became something else to add to the growing list of things to finalise before departure day.

I decided this particular sunny lunch time I would sneak out to begin breaking off the branches that had toppled over.

I was all set to dive into one of my beloved podcasts while I performed the operation, when my lovely neighbour appeared. She came over onto my side to have a chat and noticed what I was about to do.
She offered to help me and I reassured her I would be able to manage it on my own. I didn’t want her to put herself out, as she was still carrying her handbag…and after all, I was all set for some good listening while I was busy in the lovely winter sun, before scurrying back inside to pack and fill in forms.

She insisted she help, and promptly began breaking up some of the softer branches.
I watched on as she took control of the situation, initially disappointed that my ‘quiet time’ outside was disappearing.
As I watched her, I suddenly became overwhelmed with a feeling…

A feeling of ‘no, this is happening exactly as it should be. Just allow the moment to unfold…Give her space to help if she insisted on doing so.’

And so I did.

After proceeding to fetch the garden waste bin and wheeling it out to the driveway, we both worked together, chatting as we went.

Two neighbours home at the same time on a sunny lunch time.

It was more special because we haven’t had a lot to do with them, although we were always on friendly terms whenever we would cross paths- everyone seems to keep to themselves a lot more now days.

May, my neighbour, referred to the bush as a Money Tree. I’m not very strong with botanical names or common names for many plants and flowers so I took her word for this.
A feeling that pervaded this story was of a moment that was ‘off my script’…the script being my ‘to-do’ list for the day.

A keen sense that I will perhaps never share time like this again with my lovely neighbour enabled me to just ‘be’, knowing I was preparing to fly off for a long period of time. I remained enveloped in the contentment that everything is unfolding as it should, the acceptance and surrendering that sometimes the most magical of moments occur when we least expect them.

It proffered new meaning for the ‘Money Tree’ experience…

…Perhaps we both became richer that afternoon.

…Perhaps the pruning of the tree gave us greater insight into each other, the chance to pause and appreciate.

It have me reason to think that sometimes the most beautiful moments are the ones that take us off course…
The moments that don’t match our script…
The moments we aren’t expecting…
We have to make room for these moments because this is where the love lies,
in the micro-moments,
through the fostering of connection.

And you know what? I still managed to do all my other chores I had planned for the afternoon. Sometimes I find if I proceed slowly, I actually get more done. It seems to be a little paradox of Time I have noticed.

May we all grant ourselves permission to things to take us off course,
to leave the script from time to time,
to be mindful of these moments occurring before our eyes…
and simply share the gift of our presence.

“Remember then: There is only one time that is important – Now! It is the most important time because it’s the only time when we have any power.”
Leo Tolstoy

Thank you for being here,
Much love,
Di

    1. Hello dear Kate,
      What a lovely surprise!
Thank you for connecting. I’ve been thinking of you and things are certainly busy here. I’m pondering about what to do next with my writing.
I am having trouble keeping up with reading blogs and if I can’t give back, I’m hesitant to write posts myself. I began to go through my ‘following’ list yesterday and only managed one!
I’m going to look into avenues for just writing for its own sake.
I still do Insta and that takes up a lot of time.
I hope you have had a great time doing what you were called to do.
Perhaps we can email again and explore further.
Great to hear from you, truly.
      Warmest regards,
      Di 🙋🏻💐💐

      1. Glad to know you’re okay, settled yet? Is it the dream you expected?

I was super busy with groups 20-260, average being 150 .. too big for me. Learnt that I’d prefer to connect with my local community once I’ve moved and see what I can offer there.

      2. Hello again Kate,
Yes, we are now settled after a hectic few months and then planning for Christmas. Things may settle again in the New Year. Well, as for your question, my dream was to immerse in normal London life and to get to know her in all her quirks and beauty as well. And we are certainly doing that, and just living a different life.
And you have really been placed out of your comfort zone with such large groups by the sound of it. That itself has been worthwhile so to know where your preferences lie. As well as knowing ‘if I can do it with such a big group, I can do it for anyone…’ It sounds like a move is in your future too?
I’ll certainly catch up with some of your posts soon.
        Until next time,
        Di 💐🙋🏻

      3. I wouldn’t say ‘out of my comfort zone’ but that mass scale was a real hinderance to getting to know my students individually. I have taught/lead meditations for decades but readily concluded that local is better 😉 I totally appreciated the mix of ages and nationalities and met some totally delightful people but I’ve always preferred ongoing relationships rather than the transience that is a part of travel … something you may get to know in London

    1. Hello Denzil,
How very kind of you to check in and ask how things are. Thank you so much.
Yes, it’s been a month now and we are feeling more settled every day. My hubby is busy at work and we are just now in the place we will be calling home for the time we are here.
I hope all is going well with you ‘just over there’ from here.
      Thank you again Denzil,
      Best wishes from Di 💐

  1. It’s such a wise advise to not get tangled up in a script completely, but allow for things to take us out of course. It’s very easy to feel rushed though, when things are piling up and you have a deadline to meet, such as going to London. I wish you all the best with the journey.

  3. Di, I am sorry I missed this post, and am just seeing it now. I love it….all of it. So often I seek alone time and avoid people so I can get lost in my music or my thoughts, but your post has made me realize what I might be missing out on by doing that. There is so much to be gained through connections and moments. You have articulated that beautifully here and this will sit with me as I move forward. I am so thankful you had this experience and shared it with us. Are you in London now?? If you are, I hope your travel went well and you are settling in!! xo

  4. Very wonderful advice, Di. I totally agree. When I am traveling, it is easier to accept the off-script moments (so wise of you to call them this!). At home or work it is so much harder. I really respect you for recognizing this moment for what it was…I will remember this the next time this happens to me, and hopefully be more patient. Thank you. 🙂

  6. Oh ! A post with so much of value and hidden secrets. When I look back, the most cherished moments are thoes where I let me flow with the time and less bothered about my planned stuffs. I have a believe that an unexpected mind is more creative as it doesn’t have to cater to the prepared conditionings, thus opening new ways ….or in your words “let yourself 🙂 open up” .
But yes we play safe as it’s inherent to us.
Indeed a beautiful post to ponder on for lifelong.
Have a beautiful journey with many more revelations and joy.

  9. A very thoughtful posting, Di. It is so true that as we rush through our days on our own agenda, we don’t appreciate those moments that grab us. I am guilty of being irritated by interruptions to my well made plans and I thank you for reminding me to appreciate all moments, whether planned or unplanned.

  10. I simply love this, Di. It’s so easy to feel irritated or resentful when someone interrupts our plans, unless it’s an interruption we welcome, but your observation to let it be and allow the connection to happen, really shows how meaningful these interactions can be. You probably never thought that you’d be writing a blog piece about your neighbour and yet look at the ‘lesson’ you’ve gleaned from it. And now that lesson has been shared for us all to benefit from the experience. This is great! Sending love and hugs. 💜💜😘🙏
